Building on from the Self-Advocacy Toolkit developed in 2020, we have developed resources for use by deaf and hard of hearing people accessing the healthcare system including hospitals.
Health Advocacy Graphics
Deaf Victoria have developed eight sets of Health Advocacy Graphics (in two different colour) to assist you in advocating for your communication needs in hospitals. Please contact us if you would like other phrases.
Download these to your phone so they are available for you to show to healthcare professionals.
Generic Hospitals Complaint Letter
This is a fillable letter for you to use to make a complaint if you are not satisfied with access provided by the hospital.
There are fields where you will be prompted to provide details. Adobe PDF Reader is recommended – if you do not have this app, you can download it here.
Self-Advocate for Access
Use this video to show healthcare professionals how to communicate with you including how to book Auslan Interpreters and information about your rights from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.
