Disability Royal Commission Project
Deaf Victoria received funding from the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to provide information to the community about the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of People with Disability, otherwise known as the Disability Royal Commission.
The Disability Royal Commission (DRC) is an independent investigation in response to community concerns about reports of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation of people with disability. This also includes people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
This Auslan video will explain more about the Disability Royal Commission.
The four aims of Deaf Victoria’s DRC Project are:
- To inform the Deaf community about the Disability Royal Commission and to increase their understanding of the DRC.
- To improve Deaf people’s access and utilisation of existing resources about the DRC to enhance their ability to make submissions based on their experience.
- To facilitate Deaf community members to make submissions to the DRC with support.
- To develop four case studies related to the four areas as defined by the DRC
On Wednesday 29th July 2020, Deaf Victoria hosted an online webinar facilitated by Jen Blyth alongside with three panellists – Alex Jones (Assistant Director – Policy & Engagement, DRC), Catherine Dunn (Individual Advocacy Officer, Deaf Victoria), and Mark Sandon (Project Officer, AMIDA). This session was conducted entirely in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to meet the language and cultural needs of the Deaf Community and model peer-to-peer education and information sharing. English voiceover and live captions were also provided to allow universal access.

The DRC welcomes submissions in either Auslan or written English. For Auslan submissions, the DRC has a translation team who will be able to translate your submission into English.
Deaf Victoria will provide support to deaf and hard of hearing Victorians who wish to make a submission to the DRC. To get support for your submission, you can contact our Individual Advocacy Officer, Catherine Dunn at advocacy@deafvictoria.org.au.
Alternatively, you can contact Mark Sandon at mark@amida.org.au for support with making your submission to the DRC.
